Head of Research Training & Career Development
MRC Unit, The Gambia is the leading research centre in sub-Saharan Africa and has been carrying out internationally competitive research into tropical medicine for more than 60 years. Our current research agenda focuses on three themes: Disease Control & Elimination; Nutrition; Vaccines & Immunity. Looking towards the future, we are aiming to push forward into new and challenging areas, reflecting changes in national and global health priorities.
To support our vision, we are seeking a Head of Research Training & Career Development. You will enhance the Unit’s profile by engaging young scientists and leading them through a scientific career path and will also take care of the training needs of the research support services. This is an exciting full-time role that will involve developing and implementing a training strategy and leading the Unit’s Training Committee.
Person requirements
Essential
You will have a degree with considerable relevant experience in a senior training role, significant experience in managing scientific training & development, proven ability to provide effective leadership and manage teams to achieve objectives and enhance performance. You must have excellent communications skills, experience in budget management and expenditure forecasting, the ability to supervise, mentor, inspire and motivate students and staff from a variety of backgrounds and the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships, both internally and with external organisations/agencies.

Previous experience working in Africa and/or in low-middle income countries
The appointment is for three years and is subject to a probationary period of six months.
An attractive salary will be paid in MRC’s Band 4. Generous overseas allowances, furnished accommodation, flights and other benefits apply for displaced staff.
