We recently launched a South African faculty of GHT at a clinical trials course in Cape Town that was attended by clincial researchers from several African countries (including South Africa, Malawi, Zambia and Botswana). We gave a short presentation followed by a live link with colleagues in Oxford who demonstrated the website. There are currently 3 members in South Africa who are happy to coordinate activities and ideas at least for this country (myself, Lesley Workman and Havana Chikoto), and possibly region-wide if that were of interest. I would be keen to hear from anyone interested in discussing this venture. Our initial thoughts are to spend the second half of 2012 raising awareness of GHT by way of workshops held at research institutions (such as universities) where interested staff can come along to hear about the website but also get hands-on experience of browsing and setting up their profile (including professional membership scheme). During the workshops we will find out what delegates' needs are as regards clinical trial support/resources so that, longer-term, we can aim to fulfil them. Any comments on this strategy are very welcome! Liz Allen

This is a fantastic initiative. The Manhiça Health research Centre (CISM), in Manhiça, southern Mozambique, has performed in the past large complex clinical trials, including some of the RTS,S malaria vaccine candidate trials. We would be willing to collaborate with this initiative, and would be happy to receive more information.

Congratulations Liz and the group. This is a most welcome initiative. You definetely need to send more word out for capturing interest in other 10 countries in SADC. This could be a start of harmonisation in building an informed research force in the region. Please continue the good work.
