Steven Wayling

About: Steven Wayling spent 25 years with the World Health Organization (WHO), the past two decades with the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR). I supported capacity building and capacity utilization in over 60 disease endemic countries by promoting research-based grants for institutional strengthening, through numerous activities aimed at human resource development, co-developing 6 Masters programmes in health economics (2) and epidemiology (4), managed a portfolio of TDR-funded post-graduate students, and most recently through the promotion of regional and global research networks. I organized, facilitated and lectured at 45 workshops in 25 developing countries, site visited and supported TDR-funded investigators in over 60 developing countries and was an invited speaker at over 20 international conferences. I have published on a myriad of topics including capacity building and empowerment in developing countries and sits on the advisory and review committees of other organizations and foundations. In 2008, I obtained a US$ 3 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to scale up clinical trials capacity in the developing countries, and am a co-PI on a US$ 10 million Wellcome-Trust grant as part of the Consortium to Advance Research Training in Africa (CARTA). In 2011, TDR was selected by an international jury from over 150 nominations worldwide for the Gates Award for Global Health. The jury cited "TDR's extraordinary contributions towards progress in the knowledge and practice of health in low-income societies, demonstrated leadership, an established record of achievement, innovation in program design, organizational capacity, collaboration with others, evidence that TDR’s (30 year) contributions have been adopted across geographic and organizational boundaries, and the substantial impact on health around the world."
