Prof. Luis Huicho

About: I am a pediatrician, based in Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia and Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Lima, Peru. My main interest is related to clinical, epidemiological and public health research, particularly on maternal, neonatal and child health issues. I have been involved in several multi-country research efforts, such as the MCE of IMCI that aimed to evaluate the impact, cost and effectiveness of IMCi in five countries (Bangladesh, Brazil, Peru, Tanzania, and Uganda. I am also involved in health systems and HRH research projects. Preparation and conduction of randomized or quazi-randomized trials for evaluating public health interventions is part of my research agenda. Currently, together with Dr. Theresa Ochoa (PI) we are running a Gates-funded randomized controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy of a glycoprotein in prevention of newbborn mortality due to sepsis. With various partners, we are also considering for the near future the conduction of community trials for assessing various public health interventions. Finally, we are also aware that RCTs may not be feasible or ethical, and that there is the need of discussing and agreeing on the importance of alternative designs, particularly for public health interventiions implemented under complex, real life situations.
