Ghaiath Hussein

About: Dr. Ghaiath M. A. Hussein, MBBS, MHSc. (Bioethics) Ghaiath Hussein is currently a PhD Researcher at the University of Birmingham. His thesis is about the adherence of the international NGOs to the ethical standards of Research in the research and 'research-like' activities conducted during man-made disasters, with the case study of Darfur. He has been working as an assistant professor of medical ethics at the Department of Medical Ethics at the Faculty of Medicine of King Fahad Medical City (KFMC) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Following his graduation from the Al-Zaem Alazhary University Faculty of Medicine in 2002, he attained the first part of the Clinical MD in Community Medicine in 2006, and then completed a master degree in bioethics from the University of Toronto Joint Centre for Bioethics in 2008. After his return from Canada, he contributed to the editing of National Guidelines for Research ethics and the development of the Primary Review Committee in the Research Directorate at the FMOH. As a part of his master’s practicum, he sat on Research Ethics Boards in the University of Toronto, and co-facilitated teaching of some practical ethical for medical students at the University of Toronto. He also presented in the National Health Research Ethics Conference in Ottawa in 2008. His working experiences developed since he first joined the Research Directorate (Federal Ministry of Health, Sudan) as the researchers’ training and capacity building coordinator in 2006, until he became the deputy director of the directorate in 2008. He was in the WHO Taskforce on Ethical Issues in Preparedness Plans during the influenza A H1N1 pandemic in Geneva in 2009. He worked on teaching medical ethics for undergraduate medical students (Africa International University, King Saud University & Tabuk University), Psychology Masters Students (Ahfad University for Women), and ethical issues in public health practice and research for the candidates of the Joint Program of Community and Family Medicine in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia). He is also a course instructor for the People’s Uni. online Course on Ethical Issue in Public Health with Professor Richard Heller. He was assigned the Senior Project Officer with COHRED on its EU-funded Mapping African Review Capacity (MARC) project. He is the editor-in-chief of the online Sudan Health Research Library (https://sites.google.com/site/healthresearchlibrary/) and the undergraduate medical ethics course (https://sites.google.com/site/medicalethicscourse/). He has been also providing consultations on research ethics, clinical ethics, and public health ethics' teaching and policy development for a number of institutions, including Federal Ministry of Health (Sudan), King Fahad Medical City, Saudi Aramco, and WHO. He has been awarded the Life Honorary Membership from the Medical Students International Network’s (MedSIN) office in Sudan for his efforts to help medical students as future doctors, as well as his membership of the International Epidemiological Association, the Joint Centre for Bioethics, International Educators for Ethics Society, and other national NGOs.
