Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST) is organizing the 8th Annual National Research Ethics Conference (ANREC) from 4 – 6 July 2016 in Kampala, Uganda. ANREC is a platform for engagement and interaction among the various actors involved with human research participants. Researchers, regulators, policy makers, members of research ethics committees, civil society groups and research communities, come together to share experiences and discuss contemporary issues affecting the conduct of human research participants in Uganda and the region. ANREC has been held consistently by UNCST and partners every year since 2009.
The 8th ANREC will demonstrate the various ways researchers show respect for research participants. The aim is to equip researchers, policy makers, research ethics committees, community representatives and other stakeholders with knowledge and understanding of how research participants ought to be respected before, during and after research, especially in the Ugandan context. While other issues will be examined, the main focus will be on understanding the informed consent process, confidentiality and compensation mechanisms for human research participants. The 8th ANREC, therefore, is an opportunity to explore the aforementioned issues in Uganda, East Africa and around the world, and more importantly, how we can apply the lessons learnt to improve research conduct in Uganda.
The 8th ANREC will feature distinguished local and international speakers. The detailed program as well as speakers information will be updated at www.uncst.go.ug. Prior to the conference, the Forum for Research Ethics Committee Chairpersons in Uganda (FRECU) will hold their 20th meeting on Monday 4th July 2016. FRECU is attended byChairpersons of RECs only.
