Summary
This protocol describes a major UK trial to establish or refute the claimed
benefits of
vitamin D and calcium, alone or in combination, to prevent bone fractures
in the
elderly. The trial is designed to be as simple as possible both for those
participating
and for those involved in clinical care. Research nurses will provide local
coordination
in all clinical centres.
