Introduction

The progress report should cover the work undertaken since the programme grant was awarded or since the last report. The frequency of the reports will vary depending on the funding body. Before the trial starts, the grantholders should find out how often they would be expected to submit a progress report, the expected content of the report and, ideally, if there is a progress report template available.

The type of information requested may include:

Summary of project progress to date
Summary of recruitment to date
Problems encountered by the project to date
Adverse events encountered by the project to date
Changes to protocol to date
Changes to project staff to date
Project outputs submitted for publication
Conference presentations and media interviews
Actions recommended by the Trial Steering Committee/Data Monitoring Committee to date

Things to consider when writing a protocol

Describe timing and content of any planned progress reports.
Consider including a template in an appendix.

Illustrative example
Grantholders will provide six-monthly reports on practical progress of the trial using the HTA progress report template. The template for the report can be found in Appendix I.
